Relationships of Ego-resilience to Stress Coping Strategies and Psychological Well-being in College of Nursing Students

Abstract
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to authenticate the usefulness of ego-resilience by analyzing the relationship between ego-resilience and psychological well-being, and to find out the ways to enhance ego-resilience by analyzing the relationship between ego-resilience and stress coping strategies.

Method : The subject of the study was 200 undergraduate students who live in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Gangwon Province, and Daejeon. The data of the study was collected by measuring ego-resilience scale, stress coping strategy scale, and psychological well-being scale. The data of the study was analyzed by using Pearson correlation, Independent t-test, and Canonical correlation.

Results : There were significant differences between high and low ego-resilient groups in psychological well-being. The low ego-resilient group tended to use emotion-focused coping strategy. The confidence among four sub-variables of ego-resilience was the most significant factor in predicting stress coping strategies. In comparison, the emotion-focused strategy among four sub-variables of stress coping strategies was the most significant factor in predicting ego-resilience. In relationship between ego-resilience and psychological well-being, the confidence and optimistic attitude were more significant factors in predicting psychological well-being. The self-acceptance, positive relation with others, and purpose in life of psychological well-being sub-variables had more predictive power to ego-resilience. The problem-focused and emotion-focused strategies among four stress coping strategy were significant factor in predicting psychological well-being. The self-acceptance, autonomy, environmental mastery, and purpose in life had predictable power to stress coping strategy.

Conclusion : The study verified that the relationship between ego-resilience and the psychological well-being which is reflecting the quality of the life. We also validated that the emotion-coping strategy was related with ego-resilience and psychological well-being. To enhance ego-resilience, reducing emotion-focused coping strategy could be considered.
